Fines Aren’t Fine: Don’t Overlook Compliance Management

When considering the requisite features of modern core-processing systems and their capabilities — policy and claims administration, billing, integrations, et al. — it might be easy to overlook compliance management.

Some prospective penalties are less likely than others. As examples, most companies will likely never incur penalties for unfair trade practices, for transacting business without a license, for unfair claims-settlement practices, for solvency or market-conduct issues. On the other hand, it’s possible you could be held responsible — however unwittingly — for things like rate- and form-filing violations, data-privacy infractions, reporting inadequacies, and others.

That’s why modern core-processing systems build in automation, rules engines, real-time validation, audit trails, and configurability for products and workflows that minimize human error and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements across all stages of the policy lifecycle. (In contrast, legacy systems often contribute to compliance gaps due to data silos, manual processes, and inflexibility.)

Here’s How They Work

  • Automation: Modern systems embed regulatory rules directly into processes, flagging issues in real time, automating deadline alerts, generating compliant document and forms, and supporting straight-through processing (STP). That reduces manual errors that can lead to delayed claim acknowledgments, improper denials, or inaccurate filings.
  • Transparency: Complete, time-stamped logs of all transactions, changes, and decisions simplify audits and market-conduct exams. You can prove — and regulators can quickly verify — compliance, reducing or eliminating corrective actions or fines.
  • Configurability: Low-code/no-code tools allow rapid updates for new regulations, state-specific requirements, or product changes without custom coding. That shortens adaptation time and helps prevent penalties from outdated processes.
  • Data Integration: Centralizing data provides a single source of truth and minimizes discrepancies across systems, while integrations with third-party systems and data sources improve underwriting, rating, and reporting accuracy.
  • Analytics and Monitoring: Built-in reporting and dashboards provide visibility into compliance metrics, helping you take the initiative to address gaps.

Progress, Not Perfection

Can modern core-processing systems overcome all the challenges you face? We wouldn’t bet on it. The industry still has issues. Poor configuration, incomplete data migration, inadequate user training, or weak change management still limit effectiveness. Errors can still occur. Ever-changing regulations, cyber risks, or third-party issues may still introduce new exposures. Non-compliance penalties in still occur. But we’re making progress and getting closer to perfection all the time.

Is any of this news? Probably not. But non-compliance penalties and fines aren’t fine.

If you’re not making the kind of progress you want, let’s talk.
